Be Bold!

In all of our 22 years living in Maine we never had a cardinal at our bird feeder.  Scott tried everything to attract these red beauties - food, feeders, plantings and still nothing.  We had plenty of chickadees and gold finch and friends who had cardinals in their yard.  So all that was left was to dream.  When we moved to Cape Cod two years ago everything was put into storage except what we could squeeze into our cars.  Scott insisted that the bird feeder had top billing as winter was coming and the Massachusetts birds would be hungry.  So the pole and 2 feeders made the cut and a home outside the window at our rental in Osterville.  And to our astonishment and delight a cardinal was one of our first visitors.  When we moved to our Mashpee home in the spring we discovered 2 cardinals here so we clearly made the right choice in abode.
This year our friends John and Terry sent us a beautiful glass cardinal ornament for our Christmas tree.  I nestled it amidst the silver ornaments and sent a photo to Terry.   "'Oh no I messed up your color scheme! " she said.  "It really stands out but I love it."   Me too.  I think that it's important to be different, to stand up and be bold. I read that those who attract the cardinal as their totem are naturally energetic, love life, and happily help others when they can.  Sounds like a good motto to me.

Headshots: Is it Time for an Update?

When was the last time you updated your headshot?  Unless you're job hunting most people don't even think about it.  It's nice to have a current one on hand, whether for your company website, Linkedin, or even a blog or article posting.  Many require a formal format with a traditional backdrop while others are good with a more casual approach.    The latter allows for more personal expression - and more fun!  Jim loves the outdoors so this was a perfect setting for him.

Three by the Sea

Debbie wanted photos of her girls, Veronica and Melanie, at their
favorite beach in Falmouth so I was happy to join them and explore a new location.

You gotta love sisters!

Debbie is such a sweetheart - she didn't expect to be part of the party but we persuaded her to join. Love the mother/daughter shots!

We crossed the street and the girls brought us down a hidden path to another favorite destination by the marsh.

Beautiful girls in my new favorite setting!

Happy Boys

Kelly wanted a photo session with her two boys to commemorate this little guy's 1st birthday, so we met up at one of my favorite places in Sandwich.  At 14 months Chase was as curious and busy as he should be at this age, and oh so sweet.  And Colby was the ever helpful, caring, and fun 5-year-old brother.  The day was cool and overcast but that didn't put a damper on the fun as we ran and played in the grass and leaves.

Kelly chose the perfect outfits for this fall day.

It's not easy to pin down a toddler but we had a few props to help.

Scott has such a wonderful way of connecting with children.
Look at these smiles as he plays peek-a-boo!

     Nothing beats snuggling with Mom.

Sharing the load.  And the love.

Enlightened

This was a photographer's dream weekend! On Saturday I attended a photography conference in Hyannis where I spent the day immersed in workshops.  It's so invigorating learning new things and being inspired by others who are so generous in sharing their talents.  One of the sessions was a portfolio review, which I haven't experienced since graduate school.  Andy Howard offered feedback and suggestions as well as questions for me to consider as I work.  What am I looking for behind the lens?  What inspires me to take the shot?  I kept thinking about that all evening and chatted about it with Scott.  What does my heart tell me to do?  Lucky for me I had scheduled a photo shoot for two little boys the following day and could put into practice some answers to those questions.  As soon as set up the first shot and saw Colby's beautiful face smiling at me I knew that I was in the right place.  Just give me some kids, with grass and room to play, and time ceases to exist.  Capturing life.  Pure joy, plain and simple.

Fall Fun

I just completed my Sandwich photo shoot and I am in love with this family! The girls were so cute and cooperative as we moved to new settings - they had some ideas of their own which I added to the mix.  Their energy and enthusiasm made for such a fun session. At the end they brought their dog, Maggie, out of the car for the last shot.  Such a happy day!

Marsh View

In anticipation for an upcoming photo shoot in Sandwich I decided to check out my landscape options at the town beach.  I brought my tripod and planned to walk the boardwalk to the ocean.  But as soon as I arrived in the parking lot I knew I wouldn't be going any further.  There is something magical about the marsh in late afternoon, the way the colors evolve and intensify, totally enveloping you in a blanket of golden light.  As the sun faded and walkers made their way back across the gray planks, the water deepened to indigo.  I waited for the first lights to be seen in the distance before I turned to go home.

Black and White Photo Challenge

I love a good challenge.  And thinking about a black and white image for such an event always brings me back to texture.  I was intrigued by the contrasts of the tree bark, grass, leaves and dandelion seeds which threatened to blow away at any moment. Timing is everything!

Wedding Bliss

We attended a wedding in Baltimore this weekend for a close family friend.  While I wasn't the official photographer I had fun capturing a few moments of my own.  A beautiful ceremony on a beautiful day!

Off and Running

I'm so behind on blogging! I think I just have to blame it on my new mobility status as it's so hard to be inside when I can be outside exploring and making up for the past months.  So many wonderful things have happened since August! I am now a juried artist member in Fine Art Photography at the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, MA.  (www.capecodartassoc.org). Now I have a "home" to refer clients who want to see or purchase my work. The gallery will also handle online sales, which is very exciting, too!  The images featured are part of my Cape Cod collection, depicting familiar landmarks, beach paths, dune grass and waterways. You can search "members' websites" for a list of members and their work; I'm so honored to be a part of such a prestigious group of artists. So if you are in the area please stop by!

Back on My Feet

Six weeks ago I broke my foot and that has been quite a challenge for me! I was stopping to smell the roses, of all things, and took a misstep off the deck.  I know there was a lesson to be learned here and hopefully I passed the graduate level course so can move on now!  I have a whole new appreciation for anyone with physical impairments and have also decided that life at a slower pace is not a bad thing.  I have been enjoying the garden and I'm looking forward to doing some exploring outside of my backyard.  This view is from my sister Cathy's yard;  I love the pop of yellow against the weathered wood.

Cape View

A year ago my friend and fellow photographer, Jeanine, put in a request for artist display space at the Mashpee Public Library.  Initially she was given September 2014 but when July became available she had the opportunity to take it instead.  Prime artist space in Cape Cod in the summer: what could be luckier than that?  Well, maybe me... because I was invited to join her.  For the past few months we have been busy shooting, selecting, framing, signing, poster making and all of those other details required for setting up a show.  I've never been involved in anything this big - even my Master's thesis only had 14 pieces!  Today it was 26, many of them an intimate 12 3/4 x 12 3/4 size reflecting my love of Cape Cod.  Thank goodness for my husband, Scott, who took the day off and was consultant and hanger extraordinaire.

This is a little preview of my work. If you are in the area, please come!  We have filled 2 floors of the library and the show will be up through the month of July. There will be an artist's reception on July 26th from 2-4.

We are so excited!

Stephen and Anna

I have photographed many wonderful events and milestones in the lives of our children. There is a sense of familiarity seeing their smiles behind the lens, recognizing their special facial expressions,  and joyfully clicking away knowing  that these shots will become a documentation of our family history.  Saturday was a special day - our son, Stephen, married his love, Anna.  And while I wasn’t the official wedding photographer I had the honor of being “mom” photographer, capturing the preparatory shots at home.

It began with Anna, Lauren and I having our hair styled by their friend, Cassie, at the kitchen table.

 Time for the dress...

                                                                       and the shoes!

All ready to go.

Grammie and Gramps waiting until it's time for Lauren to escort them to their seats.

                                                                          It's official!

A picture perfect amazing day in every way.
