New Heights

This week my friend Terry and I took advantage of the beautiful fall weather and did some Cape exploring.  We began on Route 6A in Barnstable and decided to drive and stop whenever something caught our eye.  As we crossed the Dennis line we saw a sign for Scargo Hill Road; that sounded like a viewing opportunity.  As we drove to the summit we found that the hill had a beautiful stone tower, built in the early 1900's atop the highest hill in mid-cape.  From the top you can view all the way to Provincetown and as far west as Plymouth.  I know that I have been here in the past but it was so nice to revisit and catch the last of our fall color.  It will be gone oh so soon!

Taste of Fall

Fall has such a wonderful way of engaging all of your senses.  The sound of leaves crunching underfoot, the softness of warm sweater on a cool morning, the vibrant reds, yellows and oranges of the leaves and marsh grass against a clear blue sky, the delicious crunch of a freshly picked apple, and the sweet smell of grapes, ready on the vine.

We had fun exploring the Truro vineyards on a sunny Sunday afternoon with our friends, Connie and Joe, who were visiting for the weekend.  When you combine a side trip to PB Boulangerie in South Wellfleet with a little afternoon wine tasting you have the makings of a perfect French day without leaving the Cape. Très bon...

On a Happy Note [Cape Cod High School Senior Photographer]

Senior portraits are near and dear to my heart, especially when you have a sweetheart like Isabelle!  Because band is such an important element in her life, Isabelle wanted her portrait to be in a beach setting with her flute.  I was so excited when she chose one of my favorite spots in Osterville.

We began the session in the beach grass

and worked our way to the water and rocks.

Isabelle's mom, my friend Michele. filled in as my awesome assistant.  We had so much fun exploring our options and chatting.

And I loved the added bonus of some mother daughter shots.

As our time together was coming to a close and the sun was sinking in the sky Isabelle finished with a flourish. She put her flute to her lips and filled the air with beautiful lyrical notes.

Now that's what I call a happy ending.

Birthday Wishes

I love when clients inspire me with new ideas! I was so excited when Colleen called to book a photo session to commemorate Reagan's  birthday.  Children grow so quickly, as parents know all too well, and she thought that professional photos were a wonderful way to document her daughter's life as she turns 7.  Reagan was clearly excited about this idea;  this girl came prepared!  They arrived with a bagful of props that Reagan had collected at her grandmother's house.

As time passed Reagan became more comfortable, and gave us some model poses... well as an Irish step dancing demo.

The mother/daughter shots are very close to my heart.  Those personal exchanges tell more than words, and mean so much.

This was such a special evening for us all - I could have played all day with this sweet girl.

Happy birthday, Reagan!  I hope that you have a wonderful year, and that we can celebrate with you again!

When Friends and Family Meet [Cape Cod Lifestyle Family Photographer]

It was a perfect summer day for Emily and Brett's vacation family photo session.  Too perfect, in fact, as the beach was more crowded than I have ever experienced so late in the day.  So what to do??  We decided to start in a quiet cove across the street; we had the place to ourselves.

Sarah, 7, was a sweet and attentive big sister and David, 3, was a cute and curious little brother.

It was especially fun to be joined by second cousins, Sadie and baby Naomi, and their mom, Carly.  I wish that I could have seen the parents behind me as they worked to capture the children's attention - they were awesome!

When it was time to try the beach again we were able to find some space for some more family and kid shots.

And Mom and Dad, who look like newlyweds.

Girlfriends need their time, too.

I love the last moments at the end of the evening when the children play and the parents chat and the sky glows in orange and pink.

Finding treasures, chasing waves and laughing with delight: these memories are the best Cape Cod souvenirs.

Seabury [Cape Cod Lifestyle Family Photographer]

There's an expression in New England: if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  This certainly rang true this week with my family photo session.  It wasn't supposed to rain but midmorning a downpour came out of nowhere.  I figured all would be well by that evening except for the newest forecast that not only said rain showers but also added that dreaded little emblem of lightning bolts coming out of a cloud.  Hmm, not so good for beach shot.  Especially with the 90% highlighted next to it.  I like to allow a little wiggle room for a vacation photo shoot so we rescheduled for another day.  And what do you know, a patch of blue sky magically appeared! So we made a run for it; what a great decision!  This cute little guy and his parents were ready to go.  He couldn't wait to scramble on the first rock for a photo with his new friend, Seabury.  He was so impressed by the nice lady in the shop in Mashpee Commons who just gave the stuffed seal to him! (oh yes, for a price, his mom added).  Ahh, the joys of being 4!!  He was the cutest, funniest, sweetest boy with a grin that melted your heart.  The rain abated and we explored the quiet beach: shooting,  playing, laughing and enjoying the seaside beauty of Cape Cod.  We knew we were having fun because this little boy kept telling us that we were!  And he was so right....  I took a record number of shots and am so excited to share this sneak preview as I organize an album.  A lovely evening with a lovely family.

Summertime [Cape Cod Lifestyle Family Photographer]

Yesterday was the last day of school and my first beach photo session of the summer.  The Owen family was visiting from Westford, MA and requested a beach with rocks and grasses for their portrait; we ended up discovering another beach on the way to the beach.  What a bonus!  Quiet with all of the qualifications - sometimes surprises are the best gems.  And so much fun!  There was dancing, jumping, searching for crabs, and lots of laughing.  You could tell that they really enjoy being together - the smiles were genuine and we covered a lot of ground before the last light.  I loved all of the happy!

Beach Walk

I didn't plan on stopping at the beach but I just happened to make a wrong turn and there it was!  There was plenty of parking on this little side street so I took advantage of the opportunity.  Ahh, summer is coming...

As we prepare to move into a new month (and hopefully a new weather pattern!) it was fun to try out some new photo techniques.  I've never tried stop motion photography like this and it was sooo much fun.  I felt a little like a magician, as there is a lot of prep for shots like these - but look at the results!  I could do paint splatters all day long.   Roy Marshall was a patient and fabulous teacher; it was such a great photography club adventure.
